The summer holidays gave everyone various opportunities to step out of their usual routine. Let’s see how some of the Dulwich College Beijing students used the summer break to widen their horizons!
Our second summer story comes from Junior School student Emma W who takes us along her discovery of the Leshan Giant Buddha, the Terracotta Army and Dali.
My amazing trip
Author | Emma W
The sun blazing like a hot ball of fire, my eyes narrowing to block out the light, I smiled. The Buddha’s face smiled cheerfully at me, his eyes blazing with determination to stop this flood. It towered over us with a 71-metre height. I gasped. It was magnificent. My friend Emma Y and I did a funny pose of the Leshan Buddha. We giggled as we saw the photos, it was a bit weird. The Buddha was started by a monk named Hai Tong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the flooding waters that washed over the ships.
Later, we went to see the Terracotta Warriors. It was astounding. Their faces glowed at us and they clutched deadly weapons. The Terracotta Army was discovered by farmers while digging for a well. Astonishingly, the Terracotta Warriors lay dormant for more than 2,000 years! It consists of more than 8,000 figures simply buried in the ground and abandoned. The army of life-size terracotta soldiers, archers, horses and chariots was stationed in a military formation near Emperor Qin's tomb in order to protect the emperor in the afterlife. Each terracotta soldier appears to be unique in its facial features, revealing a high level of craftsmanship. After the deep knowledge that the Terracotta Warriors have added to our Year 5 learning, my brain was suddenly surging with power.
During the summer holidays, we went to Yunnan. First of all, we took a train to Shandong to visit my grandparents, then we set off to Yunnan. We were supposed to leave at 6.30pm, but unfortunately, the train got delayed until the next day at 1.00am. We arrived in Yunnan the next day at 5.00am! It was tiring, especially with my one-year-old brother. We arrived in Dali and stayed there for a week. Our eyes were drooping down, my back slouched with pain, but that didn’t stop me from having fun. The most exciting part was climbing a rushing river. The freezing water chilled my feet and made me shudder with fright, but I ignored it and slushed through the water. We listened to the birds chirping in unison, singing in a sweet melody. Suddenly, my head banged on something hard, and I screamed quietly in my mouth. Tears stung my eyes, and I quickly swiped them away. My head blazed with agony, and the pain pierced through me like a blade. However, I wouldn’t let it stop me.
I also celebrated my birthday on 13 August. Even though I had a very tiring three-hour fencing class in the morning, I got a treat from my father, telling me to eat whatever I would like. And I received a gift that I loved. It was the best birthday ever!
Before my summer holidays, I had to practise for a Grade 7 piano exam. Every day, I had to play for 4-5 hours, and I really felt like giving up. But the hard work paid off and because of my determination and courage, I got a good score and got distinction.
